Designing with Interior Designers – The Insignia Designs Way
Quote my Project! For a sign professional, nothings says you are part of the process as when you’re brought in at the concept level of a project by a commercial interior designer.
But interestingly enough, it’s rare that sign companies are brought in that early. Commercial designers develop the overall concept down to the details, like painting, furniture, fabrics and lighting. They establish the certainty of colors, style, tone, look & feel, and furniture height and placement so that continuity and expectations are clear. Even though signs are a functional necessity, they are usually considered late in the process.
Why is that?
Turns out, it’s nothing personal. Either the designer didn’t have good connections in the business, or signage wasn’t part of the proofs their customers signed off on.
After all, sign designers like Insignia Designs are considered specialty or “niche”partners – even though the need for our services and expertise becomes clear eventually. And then, like a missing puzzle piece, we step in to complete the picture. When I’m brought in at the beginning to demonstrate how signage can enhance and be integrated into design, I really enjoy the collaboration because it’s a win-win for us all.
Below are three savvy designers we’ve been excited to collaborate with recently:
1-Interior Motions– Though headquartered in Emeryville, this commercial designer has an office in Pleasanton. They saw our sign work at a client’s office and asked for my contact information. When they opened their own office, we created a multi-dimensional sign for them and acrylic signs of prints of work they’d done. Then our work extended to their clients, where we did a variety of signs, including window work and wall wrapimagery, such as for their client Blymyer Engineers.
2- Kathy Bate Design– We first worked with Kathy when she did interiors for Porky’s Pizza Palace in Pleasanton, where we did the signs. She brought us in on her Oceans Oyster Bar project in Union City– which was a cool job that job that really demonstrated how bringing in a sign guy early on can enhance the interior concept.
3- Alina Druga Interiors– Connecting with Alina Druga has given us some awesome projects we can really sink our teeth into. Which is pretty easy when you have as one of your specialties working with dental office designs. Creative wall and window signage is critical to the patient experience, so we’ve enjoyed working on several projects with her, including Dublin Family Dentistry and Southland Dental.
