When Todd Moberg was at the peak of his 25-year career in the medical device industry, he was traveling 70% of the time.  Being gone from Monday through Thursday took a toll on him physically and mentally, and he was missing time with his wife and kids.

Carol, who had earned her Master’s in social work, was dedicating her time to hospice care. As Carol and Todd’s family grew, Carol worked as a special needs aid in their local school district and held down the homestead to support Todd’s career.

A New Opportunity for Todd and Carol

In 2011, Todd parted ways with his medical device company and took some time off to be with his family and look for a job.  Looking at the high-level sales jobs that fit with his experience, Todd felt his passion for the same line of work slipping away.

The thought of traveling and being away from his family was more than Todd wanted, so he accepted a meeting with a franchise broker.

Insignia Designs in Pleasanton was Born

Being introduced to a variety of franchises allowed Todd and Carol to consider what it would be like to be business owners. With Todd’s background in marketing operations, finance, human resources, product launches, branding, and sales strategies, he realized he and Carol had all the skills necessary to run a business.

From financial institutions to workout facilities to restaurants and more, Todd and Carol weeded through their choice of businesses until they got to the one they had not eliminated: Signage.

At first, Carol was ambivalent regarding the idea.  Not having any experience with signage concerned her, but as she saw Todd’s excitement grow, she bought into the idea. “If this is what Todd wants, let’s do what’s best for the family.  He supported me, and now I’ll have his back.”

Although Todd admitted he didn’t know anything about signs at the time, he knew he wanted to own something that had a tangible result. As he researched the business more, Todd realized that by helping businesses develop their signage, and strategy for signage, he would be utilizing his prior experience in marketing and sales to help grow his clients’ businesses too! It was the perfect fit for his skills and the opportunity to create a family business where he could spend time with his wife as well.
