Talking About Word Walls Today

Quote my Project!

When you say “word,” I say “word walls,” an increasingly popular way companies are seeking to inspire their employees at work.

Also called “motivational word walls” or “word tracks,” they espouse core values, goals, mission and vision statements to underscore their company’s approach to doing business. It’s a motivational tool that reinforces your culture around every corner- literally.

Gone are the days when a photocopy of a mission statement hung framed in an unused office corridor. Back in my corporate days, we only heard the mission as an afterthought at quarterly and annual meetings. Or knew we could find it in the company handbook- if we ever wanted to look.

Now a company’s mission is everywhere all the time. We’re wrapping walls using color, font and scale to spread the word about what the company stands for. Word Walls can be found in conference rooms, hallways, kitchens, work areas, wherever they walk around they see keywords and phrases. In the open concept office designs we see so much of today, it’s also a great way to liven up and define space.

The key of course is choosing the ‘right’ words. To do that, Insignia Designs works with clients and their departments to learn what the company stands for. Once the words and phrases are set, we determine the colors, fonts, scale and which locations to use.

The design is always open to interpretation- some companies prefer a simple approach and others want a busy look with words placed vertically, horizontally or in circular patterns. It’s a great way to jazz up a long, boring hallway wall- even better to splash a few phrases up in the breakroom where people congregate and socialize.

Coming from the corporate world, I think it’s cool: anything you can do to motivate, encourage and elevate staff stuck inside a building all the time is a good thing.

Today’s challenge: Find a blank wall at your office and ask yourself: if you could write something inspiring on it, what would it be? What do you want your employees to think about every day?

When you have your answer, give us a call at Insignia Designs, where WORD is the word!
