Signs of Approval – Part I

Get with the Sign Program!

While leading an Insignia Designs client on a sign tour of Main Street in Pleasanton recently, I explained that getting signs approved is no easy feat. Two major issues are at play in the process- sign program requirements and permit approvals.

Today we’re talking about Sign Programs. There are four sources of sign programs and all need to be investigated before embarking on a design: local government, building/business parks, landlords, and franchises.

After being hired by a client, relevant sign programs are the first thing I check before starting the design process. The most frequent requirements I run across are:

– City governments are usually concerned with access, continuity along the street, look and feel, and placement limitations.

– Landlords and business parks require the same as above, as well as that new signs be similar in nature to -or exactly the same visually- as the other business signs in, on and around their buildings.

– Franchise headquarters can require even more in regard to actual sign details- from font to pantone colors to materials to size and more.

For anyone job, I may have only the city’s sign program to consider- other times, there are a few more- landlords and franchises are the most frequent. These all limit materials, placement, and visual effects, so it makes sense to add sign program research to your to-do list before getting too far into the design process.

At Insignia Designs, we do the due diligence so you don’t have to. Contact us today about your sign project. And check back soon for “Signs of Approval Part II- Permits and Getting the Deal Done”!
